Tekken 8 Launches In January 2024

Get ready for the next battle, but take your time. Bandai Namco revealed a new trailer for the upcoming 3D fighting game Tekken 8 at Gamescom 2023 Opening Night Live. And it turns out it’s not making its 2023 release window after all.

The new trailer does outline what to expect from the full game. 32 playable characters. A story mode. And an online lobby system where you can create your own avatar and hang out at the arcades ala Guilty Gear Xrd and Street Fighter 6.

The lobby is billed as a single-player mode, called Arcade Quest. The customisable avatars are all cartoony-proportioned characters used to roam around the arcade.

Costume customisation for the fighters is still in. Rather than just pick pre-defined costumes, Tekken lets you put whatever wacky clothing and accessory on any of the characters. There are options for classic looks (Paul with his unfloppy hair and gi is seen), give Kazuya a cool jacket, have Hwoarang sport an eyepatch again or put cat ears on Nina because why not.

Archrivals Asuka and Lili are seen wearing each other’s default costume, so expect a lot of cool as well as cursed fashion in Tekken 8.

The trailer shows glimpses of new characters that are not part of the 18 revealed fighters so far. There’s Dragunov, Shaheen, Steve Fox, Leo, Yoshimitsu, and Kuma seen in the trailer.

Given Street Fighter 6 still being popular and Mortal Kombat 1 targeting a release in September, and then Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising releasing in November, Tekken 8 moving away from the 2023 release window was sort of expected. But it should still be riding on good momentum, there’s no shortage of good fighting games to play in the upcoming months.

Tekken 8 releases on January 26, 2024 for the PS5, PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S.
