Super Smash Bros. Coming To The Switch, Smash Creator Masahiro Sakurai Confirmed To Be Involved

It’s a given that the Switch needs a Super Smash Bros., the WiiU game, Super Smash Bros. for the WiiU (or Smash 4 as the community calls it) is still popular and has an active competitive community. Even the Gamecube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee is still being played, in which various games have taken inspiration to create the platform fighters genre.

Both games mentioned are set for another main event tournament at EVO, the premier fighting games tournament.

In the last Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Super Smash Bros. will be coming to the Switch. The teaser showcased that returning cast Mario and Link will now be joined by the Inklings of Splatoon. But that’s it. It is unclear if this is a port of Smash 4 with new characters or an all-new sequel.

After the announcement, it was revealed that longtime Smash game designer Masahiro Sakurai is onboard with Smash for Switch. He confirmed this based on this tweet below:

“Right now we’re just at the stage where we revealed this game, but I’ve been working on this game in silence day after day. Please wait until we can release more information, or until release day!” reads the translation provided by SourceGaming.

Sakurai is known to be hard worker, maybe too hard. During the development of Smash for WiiU and 3DS, he sustained injuries in his arm due to playtesting, and last we heard, the injury remains long after development has  finished.

Sakurai even gone on the record to say Smash for WiiU would be his last game for the series.

His role for the upcoming Switch version is still unknown, but should he remain in director seat, we wish him all the best, just don’t push too hard. A good game developer needs to take care of themselves.
