Square Enix has announced that a native Switch 2 version for Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II will be released this October. This is timely announced on the eighth anniversary of the the original release of Octopath Traveler.
The Octopath Traveler series has quite hit either the eight million or ten million copies sold mark yet to live up to the “octo” in the series’ name, but six million copies across three titles is not too shabby.
(Two nickels for those keeping track of gaming news this week that satisfies numerology fans via the method of accruing nickels, following yesterday.)
Digital pre-orders for Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are available, either individually or as a 2-in-1 bundle.

A physical edition for Nintendo Switch 2 (albeit using Game Key Card, like Square Enix releases on Switch 2) will also be available, as a bundle of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II.
The Switch 2 versions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II has been optimised to have improved resolution and frame rate over the original Switch releases.
Octopath Traveler is the prominent series that utilises Square Enix’s HD-2D art style (high resolution 3D environments with 2D character sprites. The two entries features the story of eight different characters who start at eight different corners of the world. Players can choose either of the eight characters to start with and go traveler through the other seven paths in any order.
Octopath Traveler II isn’t a direct sequel to Octopath Traveler, as the numbered sequel is set in a different world altogether. However, last year’s Octopath Traveler 0, an adaptation of the still-alive mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions Of The Continent, is a direct prequel to the original Octopath Traveler.
Speaking of, Square Enix will be releasing another HD-2D game later this year in the form of Final Fantasy Resonance. Like Octopath Traveler 0 before it, Final Fantasy Resonance is also an adaptation of a mobile game (the now-defunct Final Fantasy Brave Exvius).
Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II has a familiar turn-based combat system. If you prefer a HD-2D game that has more direct action, the recently released The Adventures Of Elliot should be what you’re looking for.
Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II will be available on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1. The games are also available on PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S.
