Final Fantasy Resonance Announced, First HD-2D Final Fantasy Game Based On Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

At the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy Resonance. This is a new HD-2D game, but more importantly, the first ever HD-2D Final Fantasy game.

More interestingly, Final Fantasy Resonance shares a similarity with the recent HD-2D RPG, Octopath Traveler 0. Like how Octopath Traveler 0 is an adaptation of a mobile game’s story, Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the first story arc of the now-defunct Final Fantasy Brave Exvius mobile game. It’s cool that there’s now a new way to experience the defunct mobile game’s story, but also canonises them as worthwhile spin-off video games for its main fan base through this PC and console release.

Final Fantasy Resonance isn’t a straight port of the mobile game, Square Enix reassures that it’s a “refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience.” In other words, it should feel like a full video game experience that isn’t out to nickel-and-dime you. And since it’s made in HD-2D, expect giant enemy sprites to face against, which is a very different art style compared to Brave Exvius.

Expect to see appearances from the cast of the many Final Fantasy games in Final Fantasy Resonance. Cloud (of Final Fantasy VII), Tidus (of Final Fantasy X) and the Warrior Of Light (the created characters of the original Final Fantasy) are specifically namedropped in the press release.

Final Fantasy Resonance will be out actually rather soon, so there’s two HD-2D game releases this year with this title joining The Adventures Of Elliot. It will be out on October 22, for the PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

At the same Nintendo Direct, Square Enix also announced native Switch 2 ports of the many Kingdom Hearts game, as well as an appearance of Kingdom Hearts IV. Curiously not announced at the Nintendo Direct but a few hours earlier was the Switch 2 release for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.
