Kojima Productions’ follow-up to Death Stranding now has a release date. Revealed during a panel at SXSW 2025, of all things, a new 10-minute trailer showed more of the game not-called DS2 anymore, as well as a release date.
Death Stranding 2 will be out this June.
Yes, a 10-minute trailer. With so many things going, from reveal of new characters portrayed by Hollywood talents including one Luca Marinelli, to a rapid burst of lore dump to set the stage of Death Stranding 2.
It’s also a technical tour-de-force, with footages of likely in-game cinematics looking eerily close to live action. That close-up shot of the making out scene has non-clipping noses. And the vistas in this post-apocalypse world looks breathtaking.
It’s not Death Stranding 2 if it does not have no-context scenes where you have no idea what is even going on. There’s a giant kaiju battle. And apparently you can control that giant tar-based homunculus (a.k.a. the Magellan Man) and have it interface with massive tanks and flying birds to give them a head and wings. An ominous message of “we should have not connected” which goes against the theme of the original game.
All that to the tune of Woodkid’s “To The Wilder”.
There’s also more emphasis on combat this time, with a lot more footage of the game showing Sam gunning down enemies, something the original didn’t go hard on until the Director’s Cut release. But don’t think for a second that Sam is done delivering parcels. He is seen here still lugging oversized backpacks and trekking on foot. Now while carrying a toddler instead of a baby in a jar.
Snake? Snake? Snake?!?!?
Also, Luca Marinelli puts on a grey bandana in the trailer. Game director Hideo Kojima had went on the record saying “if [Marinelli] donned a bandanna, he’d be a spitting image of Solid Snake” on an Instagram post back in 2020.
Little did we know that post was foreshadowing a sneaky little reference to the “Tactical Espionage Action” game series he created. And he really does look like Snake! Legally distinct from Snake in the Konami-owned IP, of course, on the account that this character ominously lead a group of soldiers with skeleton heads. And details if the bandana grants unlimited ammo remains unconfirmed at the time of writing.
Kojima Productions will be making a stealth-action game, Physint.
