Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is out now on PC. This release, based on Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, marks the fighting game’s debut on Steam.
Virtua Fighter 5 REVO features improved graphics (Ultimate Showdown was a remake of Virtua Fighter 5 which sees the game now running on RGG Studio’s Dragon Engine), rollback netcode (a must-have feature for any competent fighting game these days), and a new balance patch. So it’s a bit more than a re-release of the PS4 remake of a PS3/Xbox 360 game.
Virtua Fighter 5 REVO also features extra DLC available including a Yakuza/Like A Dragon collab and a Tekken 7 collab. So content-wise, REVO has the same DLC offerings as Ultimate Showdown did. Which explains why the DLC is not based on Tekken 8 instead.
This release is a nice way to get the existing fighting game fans who may not be around in 2006 to get acquainted, or re-acquainted, with the pioneering 3D fighting game series.
The 3D fighting game scene has mostly been sparse with only Tekken being active. But with this release and a new Virtua Fighter game on the way, there should be more new “Tekken-like fighting games” (3D fighting games) on the horizon. Though Team Ninja might be busy with reviving their other past IP to revisit Dead Or Alive as a fighting game. Though that series has found new life as a dating sim.
Virtua Fighter 5 REVO is out now on PC (Steam) with a rather reasonable asking price for the base game, at RM78.
