Virtua Fighter 5 Gets A Remake, Coming To PS4 This June

Good news for Virtua Fighter fans. Sega announced that Virtua Fighter 5 is getting remade and coming to PS4.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, exclusive to the PS4, is remade by an “all-star team” from Sega AM2 (the original developer team for Virtua Fighter) and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (Yakuza and Judgment series).

Speaking of which, Ultimate Shodown runs on RGG Studio’s Dragon Engine and has new background music, new UI, new cinematics and new lighting and shaders used.

Not only that, there will also be an emphasis on online matches and tournaments. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will let you spectate live matches and create round-robin online tournaments. There is a private and public lobby system (up to 16 players).

No word on how the netcode is implemented.

While it looks very different to the last Virtua Fighter 5 release, Final Showdown, the fundamental gameplay is still maintained. Expect 3D movements ala Tekken, if you’re not familiar with the franchise.

Virtua Fighter 5 first released in 2006 in Japan, and its last release (Final Showdown) was in 2012. Though you can access an arcade version of Virtua Fighter 5 in Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

Fitting how RGG Studio, which has brought various Virtua Fighter games as mini-games in many past Yakuza games have contributed to this remake.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown releases on June 1 for the PS4.
