Brendan Greene a.k.a. PlayerUnknown doesn’t have an extensive game development background. He grew up in a military family, developed a passion for realistic guns thanks to games like America’s Army, and started doing mods for games like Arma as he struggles with his career.
Which makes his rise to fame, after being a consultant for H1Z1 and then contacted by Korean developers Bluehole to make PUBG, ever more fascinating.
Despite the game being in Early Access, it has been one popular game, breaking records of the highest concurrent players on Steam and selling more than 10 million copies. This has sparked more Battle Royale modes being crammed or developed into games like GTA Online and Fortnite.
This interview piece by Noclip sheds light on who Greene really is, how he started modding which then led to the creation of PUBG, his aspirations and future plans for the game. It’s certainly worth watching the full 30 minutes, which includes a montage of amazing plays for those not familiar with why the game is so popular right now.
