Say goodbye to Dualshock (for real). Sony has revealed the first images of the PS5 controller, now called the DualSense controller.
It’s quite the departure.
For one, the overall shape has been elongated and no more of the flat circular surface seen in previous controllers. Now it kinds of look like an Xbox One (or the Series X) controller, with symmetric analog sticks. Even the options button now use the hamburger symbol- the now universal symbol for settings. The face buttons also lost their iconic colours.
It also sports a weird two-tone colour for the default look, with areas of the analog stick in familiar black/grey with the rest in white. The touchpad remains, with the light bar now piping on the side of the touchpads.
The trailblazing Share button is there, but now Sony calls it the Create button as they are “pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves”.
Of course, the namesake DualSense is due to the already-talked about haptic feedback– a change from the usual vibration motors. The L2 and R2 buttons are adaptive triggers that can make you feel the tension on them as you hold or press them. The L1 and R1 buttons are also large.
The PS logo in-between is not a circular button, and there is now a built-in mic on each of these controllers, with the speaker still retained.
It’s quite the change- more than we ever expected actually. But at least it looks like it will be comfortable in the hands.
The PS5 is still set to release by the end of this year.
