Stranger Than Heaven Will Be Set In 5 Different Eras And 5 Different Cities

A new trailer for Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s next big game Stranger Than Heaven has dropped during the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview showcase.

The new trailer answers the questions the previous two different trailers have posit: why is it set in two very different time periods? The answer to that is that both the codenamed and the reveal of the Stranger Than Heaven name are the same game.

In fact, that’s not all. Stranger Than Heaven will span its portrayal of the Japanese underworld through five different eras and five different cities.

The time settings in Stranger Than Heaven are in 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. A 50-year spread. The game previously known as Project Century will be covering half of a century.

The trailer also shows the massive work that must have gone in creating new bespoke assets for Stranger Than Heaven. RGG Studio are really good at reusing assets, enough that only this year’s Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is when the pushback over seeing reused assets that has been going for some time.

But here we see all new fighting animations, characters eating food with the camera facing in front this time around showing visible eating animation (Like A Dragon games usually have the camera facing the character’s back when they are eating at a restaurant), tram riding, and more.

Five new cities, all set in different eras, for just one game should mean a massive amount of new assets.

This won’t be the last time we hear about Stranger Than Heaven. A dedicated showcase, labelled as “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven” will premiere on May 7, 7AM Malaysia Time (GMT+8). Expect to see the development team at RGG Studios join by the game’s star-studded cast from Japan and the US.

Xbox previously were actively promoting RGG Studio’s last major game (not counting spin-offs and remasters/remakes), Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

That said, Stranger Than Heaven won’t be an Xbox exclusive. The game is set to release on PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. It will also launch straight on Game Pass and supports Xbox Play Anywhere.
