It’s been some time (specifically two years) since a new Resident Evil release, and even longer (specifically four years) since a new numbered entry to the survival horror series. And soon, we’re getting a new numbered Resident Evil, the ninth.
In the middle of the Summer Game Fest 2025 showcase, Capcom teased that the new Resident Evil game in development will be revealed when the time is right, implying that we will hear news sometime next year in line with the series’ 30th anniversary. Apparently the right timing was at the end of that same Summer Game Fest, as we were treated to Resident Evil Requiem.
This is Resident Evil 9. In true modern RE games since Resident Evil VII biohazard, the title hides the number in plain sight. The letter “Q” in Requiem flashes to the number 9.
Looks like we’re not playing in the POV of Ethan Winters anymore. The trailer shows a new character, FBI agent Grace Ashcroft, who’s just been assigned by his boss to a new murder case. And it involves her having to revisit post-bombing Racoon City, reopening previous trauma in the process. Flashes of what the city was as depicted in the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 can be seen in the trailer.
The trailer definitely gives off that classic survival horror vibes again, it’s going to be scary ride again. And it helps that this iteration of the RE Engine sees much more detailed characters, now with subtle facial expressions.
Capcom not only just revealed a trailer, but also locked in a release date. Resident Evil Requiem will be out on February 27, 2026 for the PS5, PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Expect to see more of what’s dubbed as “a new era of survival horror” throughout the year, including a playable build available later at Gamescom 2025.
