New Resident Evil Game In Development

Capcom has confirmed that a new entry to the Resident Evil series is in the works.

At the tail end of the Capcom Next July 2024 livestream, Koshi Nakanishi, Director of Resident Evil VII revealed the he’s working on the next entry, which should be Resident Evil 9.

“We’re making a new Resident Evil. It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil VII], but I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial,” Nakanishi says.

No other details were shared.

Resident Evil VII (also known as Resident Evil 7 biohazard or simply, Resident Evil 7) revived Capcom’s tentpole survival horror series in an unexpected way. The gameplay shifted to first-person (which allows it to have a VR more), and it’s the first game powered by the RE Engine, which is now the go-to in-house game engine powering most of Capcom’s latest titles.

The follow-up, colloquially referred as Resident Evil 8 but officially titled Resident Evil Village, was headed by a different director, Morimasa Sato.

The new direction of the mainline Resident Evil games is balanced by the existence of the remakes of classic Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 was all successfully reimagined as third-person survival horror titles that plays more close to home to what fans are familiar with.

With no release window or official reveal for the next Resident Evil game made just yet, this is a good time for fans to speculate what clever name will the next Resident Evil have that somehow includes “IX” or “9” in the title, if the past two games’ naming convention is still applied.
