New Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Trailer Gives A Proper Introduction To New Hero

Capcom revealed a new trailer of Onimusha: Way Of The Sword at the February 2025 State Of Play broadcast. And it’s focusing on introducing the new swords-swinging demon-slashing protagonist.

He has a name you might have heard before: Miyamoto Musashi.

The fabled swordsman follows the footsteps of Onimusha 1 and 3’s Samanosuke Akechi and Onimusha 2’s Jubei Yagyu, who are actual samurai that has since been romanticized via their depictions in popular culture, from video games (even outside the Onimusha series) to TV and movies.

Speaking of movies, the face of Miyamoto Musashi is also a familiar one if you know your samurai flicks, in particular the famous works of Akira Kurosawa.

Toshiro Mifune lends his likeness for Onimusha: Way Of The Sword’s Musashi.

For the voice, the English dub casts Kenichiro Thomson as the voice of Musashi.

Capcom has been regularly using likenesses of real people for their RE Engine games, like the current crop of Resident Evil games and Devil May Cry 5. So this trends continues with the return of the Onimusha series, a series that went dormant since the 6th-gen (PS2) consoles era.

Set in early Edo period Kyoto, Onimusha: Way Of The Sword centers around Musashi’s struggle against gruesome enemies which he must slay, from the double-axe-wielding Byakue to groups of Genma that devours people.

While Onimusha used to be known as Resident Evil with samurais, due to the many shared mechanics including fixed camera angles, Way Of The Sword looks more like a character action game, at least in the way it’s presented right now. The trailer shows gameplay of Musashi cutting demons (literally as there are dismemberments being depicted), using the environments in fights like how tatami mats can be used as makeshift shields. Capcom dubs the genre as “swordplay action”, and until we get a hands-on we’ll just have to guess what flavour of action game we’re looking at here.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword is releasing in 2026.
