New Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Gameplay Trailer Reveals Rival Oni Gauntlet Wielder

Capcom had booked quite the screen time on Summer Game Fest 2025, some of which is used to show a new gameplay trailer for Onimusha: Way Of The Sword.

The next new entry for the long-dormant action game series that brings samurai swordplay of medieval Japan with a supernatural twist shows more of said swordplay as we see protagonist Musashi slices and dices demonic adversaries. He even pulls out dual hammers for an area-of-effect attack, suggesting his moveset would include more than just a sword.

Other than a glimpse of a new level, where it’s more in ruins with floating boulders rather than the grounded look of previous trailers as well as the appearance of new enemies, we also see a rival Oni Gauntlet wielder by the name of Sasaki Ganryu. Also known as Sasaki Kojiro, it’s likely we have ourselves a Blue Oni Red Oni situation here, him and Musashi are already colour-coded to be rivals.

And yes, similar to Miyamoto Musashi, Sasaki-san here is a real person, Wikipedia page and all. And they are actual rivals, their duel is the stuff of legends and have a few depictions in popular culture. And soon we will have another interpretation of these two samurais’ tale.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword was the first game Capcom announced to be released in 2026. This week, the publisher had announced two more potential big-hitters releasing next year, including Resident Evil Requiem (which is so on track for release it already has a date), and the long-in-development Pragmata.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword is still set to release sometime in 2026 for the PS5, PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S.
