Netflix Acquires Night School Studio

Netflix looks to be seriously wanting to get into video games, as the binge-watch-as-a-service company has made its first acquisition related to video games today by buying up Night School Studio.

Night School Studio is the development team behind Oxenfree, Afterparty, and the upcoming Oxenfree 2. The team also developed a tie-in game for Mr. Robot, a Netflix show, years back.

“We’re inspired by their bold mission to set a new bar for storytelling in games,” a statement from Netflix reads. “Their commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together.”

“Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing,” said Night School co-founder Sean Krankel. “It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively.

Netflix affirms that any video games they produce will be included as part of the existing Netflix subscription, with no ads and no in-app purchases.

The service is currently trialling the addition of several mobile games for subscribers to download and play in Poland, and has recently expanded to more countries.
