File this under “video games adjacent news” but this should be interesting to you. 3Particle Solution Sdn Bhd has opened the first Extended Reality (XR) Stage studio in Malaysia, named XR Stage Malaysia.
The three-floor studio located at Sunway Subang Business Park is equipped to host virtual production, useful for live broadcasts (including esports event hosting) and filming.
Extended Reality is the catch-all term that includes the use of augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).
3Particle is utilising the Unreal Engine (Epic Games’ famous game engine), disguise’s XR platform, Mo-Sys camera tracking for its XR stage tech.
The tech used at XR Stage Malaysia is, in a way, an advanced form of green screen tech. One that can add in shadows, lighting effects and do moving camera angles without the subjects wonkily being chroma keyed out. All done in real-time.
(There’s also a traditional green screen and white screen setup available within the location for normal photography and videography use.)
As an example of how the tech works, here’s a clip of Jay Chou perfoming on an XR stage.
Though for a more subdued example, YouTuber Tom Scott did a whole game show series recorded in a studio utilising disguise’s XR solution:
And for a more gaming-centric example, the HP Omen Challenge 2019 broadcast incorporated disguise’s tech.
The XR studio will be run as a joint venture between 3Particle and educational partner Giochi Academy. Collaboration partners include Unipix, MSAV, Video Dot Com and Eight Three Studio.
Should it take off, expect to see major improvements to your locally-made live broadcasts and streams, gaming or otherwise. And maybe better local films.
