Square Enix announced an enhanced edition of the much-loved, critical acclaimed tactical RPG Final Fantasy Tactics will be released later this year.
Revealed at the June 2025 State Of Play showcase, Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t referred to as a remaster, but rather an “enhanced version” with quality-of-life changes, full voiceover, a “ground-up graphical overhaul” (are we sure this isn’t a remaster or a remake?) and updated UI.
Interestingly, Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles will also include the original game, faithfully recreated, for those looking to play this game again on modern platforms who won’t accept anything less than the 1997 classic (with the text translation based on the 2007 War Of The Lions release) that’s already perfect.
For the uninitiated, Final Fantasy Tactics takes the turn-based battles to the battlefield, where terrain and placement of units matter on top of the usual turn-based combat. Hence, making this a Tactical RPG (some say strategy-RPG).
Alongside the tactical combat, characters can specialised into different jobs (classes), over 20 available including the classics like Black Mage, Dragoon, Summoner, Thief and more, joining the like of FF Tactics-specific jobs like the Geomancer, a job that specialised in using the environment against foes. There are over 300 character abilities to customise your party with, so plenty of strategic options are on offer.

Underneath the RPG chess is one of the most highly-regarded stories told in a video game, as players follows the personal conflict of Ramza Beoulve and the bigger political conflict in the world of Ivalice, a world where magic is spelled as “magick” in the English translations, also seen depicted in one of the more underappreciated mainline Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy XII (which has had a modern re-release) and Vagrant Story (which yet to receive a re-release).
To really sell you on the story, here’s a message from Yasumi Matsuno, the original script, scenario writer and editor for Final Fantasy Tactics:
Nearly 30 years ago, the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy engulfed the nation’s financial institutions in mountains of bad debt, triggering a wave of corporate bankruptcies, a sudden and extreme rise in unemployment rates, and stagnation of Japanese society as a whole. It was an era when many were robbed of hope, when dreams were measured by their price tag.
Against this backdrop, I crafted a story. It was the story of Ramza, a young man who fought tirelessly against the entrenched social class system. It was the story of Delita, who sought to take advantage of this confusion and despair to advance his own social position. It was a story of a peculiar destiny, in which friendship and betrayal intertwine.
And now in 20205—a time when inequality and division are still deeply rooted in our society—I offer this story once again.
The will to resist is in your hands.
Kazutoyo Maehiro (Director), Hiroshi Minagawa (Art Director), and Yasumi Matsuno (Original Script, Scenario Writer and Editor), members from the team that made the original Final Fantasy Tactics, are also involved in the creation of FF Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles alongside Square Enix’s Creative Studio III, the development team that made Final Fantasy XIV and XVI.
