F1 25 Brings Big Changes To MyTeam Mode – You’re Not A Driver-Owner Anymore

The first batch of deep dives for EA Sports F1 25, this year’s Formula 1 game by Codemasters, has been released. And as promised, it’s a overview on the major changes made to My Team mode and Career mode.

Dubbed as “the biggest overhaul since it was introduced in F1 2020”, My Team 2.0 as it’s referred in the announcement makes fundamental changes to how this mode work. At the core of this is making you, the player, just an owner.

The previous iteration of My Team, you play as a driver-owner of the 11th team on the F1 grid. And it’s all played-up as being something special, there are few driver-owners (in football terms, player-managers) in 75+ years of F1 history.

This time around, your character is just an owner. And you hire two drivers instead.

But this isn’t F1 Manager, so you still get to drive the cars on race weekends. Instead of the more immersive aspect of being a driver-owner, now you can take control of one of the two drivers to race as, video-game style.

The opens up a strategic option, where you can take control of the leading driver in the team to help their driver’s championship title. Or play the team game and take control of the driver that lost the quali battle and help them make up lost position to score points in Sunday and improve the team’s standings in the Constructors’ championship.

Reflecting on the real-world sport’s changes, Constructor’s championship placement will affect how much you gain resource points, the currency used to develop new parts. And there’s also the cost cap, so you can’t be spending too much in a year or face heavy penalties.

Signing drivers have also been expanded on. You can meet-up with drivers for a face-to-face meeting to discuss terms of the contract, and these conversations can be leaked, which may have knock-on effects. Silly season is about to get a bit more silly.

Also, other teams can now recruit drivers not just from the junior feeder series pool. They can recruit Driver Icons too. It’s totally possible for your My Team mode save to have The Michael in a Ferrari again and Senna in a McLaren again, and it’s not you that made it happen. You can opt out of having Driver Icons, or only make a selection available in the driver market.

(On another interesting note, the driver market features one Jarno Opmeer, three-time F1 Sim Racing World Champion, as seen in the deep dive video.)

F1 25 will feature a proper livery editor, referred as the Decal Editor. You can freely place the sponsor logos and create liveries instead of opting for presets.

My Team (as well as Career Mode) allows you to play as Konnersport, the fictional 11th team from F1’s Braking Point story mode, or if you have the right DLC, play as APXGP, the 11th team from the upcoming F1 film instead of making your own custom team. It will be the last time you can have these as the 11th team on the grid since an actual 11th team, Cadillac, is joining the real F1 grid next year.

Accolades, introduced in F1 24, returns in F1 25, but with a different context. Now you earn Accolades to increase your Fan Rating, which gives you perks like the ability to woo in bigger title sponsors or sign prestigious drivers.

F1 25 will be out on May 30 for the PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, EA App) and Xbox Series X|S.
