EA To Buy Glu Mobile For $2.1 Billion USD

EA is on a spending spree. Today they announce their acquisition of mobile game publisher Glu Mobile in a deal worth $2.1 Billion USD.

This acquisition is to expand the scale of EA’s mobile game business which creates a portfolio of “more than 15 top live services” with a combined value of $1.32 billion in bookings in the past year.

“Our acquisition of Glu combines amazing teams and deeply-engaging products to create a mobile games leader with proven expertise across many fast-growing genres,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA.

“This transaction is the culmination of the tremendous work of the Glu team to deliver world-class interactive experiences for our players, while driving business momentum that has led to strong financial and operational results. It represents a terrific outcome for all of our stockholders and other key constituents,” said Nick Earl, CEO of Glu.

EA will continue to “accelerate growth” in the mobile game space and enhance the live service games. Glu haves games like Design Home, Covet Fashion and MLB Tap Sports Baseball (a game with a sports license), all will benefit from EA’s global licensing and distribution capabilities, the press release says.

This sounds a lot like what EA said about its deal with Codemasters, but double the price.

While this won’t change much of the mainstream console and PC gaming space, EA will now rocket themselves up in the huge mobile games market with this acquisition.
