Sega has released its 2020 annual integrated report, and has revealed that Yakuza, as a series, has now passed 14 million sales across all of its entries.
As PC Gamer pointed out, the series passed 11 million in 2018 (when Yakuza 6 was released) and then 12 million in 2019. So that’s a 2 million jump for this year’s report.
Sega admits that the Yakuza series is niche, but its niche of portraying Japanese culture has now started to gain popularity overseas, similar to how Sega-owned Atlus’ Persona series are now.
The report says that moving forward, the series will be looking at multi-platform releases across multiple services. Yakuza for the longest time was released only PlayStation, but now more titles are being made available on PC via Steam and Xbox, with some titles even offered on Xbox Game Pass.
It’s impressive to see the series about serious crime drama (but not really) has started to gain more fans. This is the year where a sad but goofy karaoke song from the series became a proper, worldwide meme. But that fame has also translated into actual sales numbers too.
The latest game from the franchise, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is out now on PS4, PC (Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S (but not on PC and Xbox for Asia). Like A Dragon continues the series’ exploration of Japan’s criminal underworld, but with a new protagonist, a new story arc and as a proper JRPG with its turn-based combat.
