Warhammer 40,000 Announces 9th Edition Rules For Tabletop, Jumps On The Backwards Compatibility Trend

In a big livestream today Games Workshop announced the arrival of 9th Edition of the sci-fi tabletop, complete with a CG “branding trailer”.

The new trailer features the iconic Space Marines, as well as the recently-refreshed Sisters of Battle and brand-new updated Necrons (think Space Undead) , set across the game’s iconic gothic landscapes.

As Games Workshop makes money by selling books featuring rules and datasheets for units every edition, they were quick to announce that 9th Edition would feature some backwards compatibility, with codexes from 8th edition being usable in 9th.

The new edition works seamlessly with all existing codexes and Psychic Awakening books, which is particularly important as we still have three more Psychic Awakening books to go! They were all written with the new rules in mind, so you can explore these dark new events knowing all your existing rules will work when the new edition finally arrives.

In other words, while the core rules of the game may change with 9th edition, things like stat lines for units will remain the same.

The changes in 9th edition will address several critiques of 8th edition, such as over reliance on dice spam and exploitation of the game’s command points system.

The livestream also had plenty of information for the more immersive roleplayer with the announcement of Crusades.

Crusades are an addition to the game’s narrative play that allow your forces to carry a story with them across your games.
