It’s about time the PVPVE extraction shooter gets a shake-up. Indie Developer Double Stallion’s next game after their League Of Legends spin-off platformer is Surfpunk and it’s a wild combination of PVE co-op, extraction gameplay, and action-RPG.
The game is played from the top-down perspective. And fascinatingly doesn’t feature PVP at all, just PVE. It’s not an extraction shooter per se as you can play as classes that just hack and slash enemies, but there are guns. All this is wrapped in a surfer/islander aesthetic as the name of the game implies.
A gameplay breakdown of Surfpunk has been released and showcases how the core gameplay loop works. While the game can be played solo, it looks more fun with friends. Players can set up exploding barrels and thin the horde of Suni while one grabs the Evress crystal.
Since there’s no PVP, extraction in Surfpunk mostly serves as when the run must end. Catch the big tsunami wave and you’ll get back to base with all the loot gained, used to craft new gear.
Surfpunk is closer to Monster Hunter than it is to Hunt: Showdown. Which just makes it ever more eye-catching as its art style.
Surfpunk’s map is procedurally generated, and you can personalise your character, the Raider, and style them as your own.
Surfpunk doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expecting to catch the wave on PC (Steam).
