Starfield Is Bethesda’s Biggest Game Launch Ever With 6 Million Total Players, 1 Million Concurrent Players

We have liftoff. Starfield is out now for real, not just for folks who pay extra to play it early, on September 6.

As of September 8 2023, 6AM Malaysia Time, Starfield has amassed 6 million players, about two days after the full launch.

Note the use of “players” rather than “copies” or “units”, as this indicates the number also includes players who played Starfield via their Game Pass subscription.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer also chimed in to announce on first day of launch that Starfield has amassed 1 million concurrent players on launch.

According to SteamDB, the highest concurrent players of Starfield on Steam during the launch window was recorded on September 6, 7 PM UTC at 269,177 players. This suggest most of the players are either on Xbox consoles or use the Xbox app on PC to play the Microsoft Store version.

Having Starfield on Game Pass definitely inflated a bit of the numbers, but knowing that at least 250,000 players purchased the game in full at launch (or earlier) sounds not too shabby either, especially since we’re not even a full week after launch yet. It’s a strong start.

Starfield is Bethesda Game Studios’ new IP in years, taking the open-world RPG, with all the quirks and features that entail in a Bethesda Game Studios’ games entail, to outer space. Starfield sees you be a captain of a space ship to explore the stars, whether that be as part of the main quest or to engage in some oddball side content that will keep you busy for hours on end.
