Last year, it was announced that a sequel to SpeedRunners is in development, with a new developer at helm. And it looks like the original creators, developer Second Stage Studio, are ready to race against their own original creation with their new game, Sprint City.
Sprint City is a “high-speed multiplayer parkour game,” or a competitive platformer. Or if you ask us, a racing game that utilises 2D platforming mechanics.
Sprint City, the city, is a solarpunk setting, an eco-friendly city filled with flora on covering the rooftops. Expect a clean (like literally, the city is powered by solar energy) and bright aesthetic, not too dissimilar to its comic books-derived predecessor but distinctly different in flavour.
Sprint City, the game, will see you compete in a race with up to 8 players running, jumping, grinding, grappling hooking and parkouring to leave the competition in the dust.
At the moment, it’s not clear if Sprint City still operates under Mashed/Micro Machines rule of being the last player on screen after leaving the competition far behind gets points, with the first player to earn a specific amount of points wins.
Unlike SpeedRunners, Sprint City isn’t just a list of courses, it’s an open city where one can run around to find shortcuts and routes, which also sounds neat.
Sprint City promises tight and responsive controls, platforming/parkour mechanics where momentum plays a heavy part in how you carry your speed (the trailer shows players having to bounce up from a half pipe to reach high platforms), character customisation and an easy way to rope your friends into trying the game for free.
Instead of a Friend Pass system, Sprint City allows friends to join your game for free via a browser. There is online play and online leaderboards, if you prefer that.
Sprint City is expected to release in Early Access in Q1 2026 via Steam. The game’s hosting a closed beta test, you can check the their Discord server to join.
