Nintendo has stopped doing big press conferences in favour of a Nintendo Direct style of delivery- nicely edited videos. While we were expected to not see any big announcements, some of those announcements are what fans wanted to hear. And at the end of the day, when it comes to who “wins” E3, that is all that matters apparently.

Just Announce Games That We Want!
Nintendo got some huge negative vibes after their Pokemon-themed Direct last few weeks that only announced re-releases of games we’ve seen and obviously not announcing a Pokemon made for the Switch. Some were even furious because it’s obviously what everyone wanted- have a Pokemon game on the portable console.

And we just got that. It’s in development. Also in development? Metroid Prime 4. You can see some passionate crowd screaming over just a title reveal, but again, that’s all we wanted- to hear games we wanted to be in the works. And Nintendo just wins back a ton of favours with those title announcements.

Kirby and Yoshi
Two new games for Kirby and Yoshi were announced to be out next year.. and it is currently simply called Kirby and Yoshi. No subtitles yet, but that was one of our first look at what Nintendo is releasing after 2017.
Flirting With Esports?
While we did not see any big announcements relating to this, Nintendo is again making competition an attraction at their E3 presence this year. A few competitions related to Splatoon 2, ARMS, and Pokken Tournament DX were held.
Will we ever see Nintendo going full supportive of esports? Will we see an official tournament circuit? With recent statements on why Nintendo purposefully not including any Smash Bros. game for their little tournaments at E3, maybe not. But that they are still open to the idea of supporting the community, even if it is not like the way people wanted.

Super Mario Odyssey
Mario is this year’s Zelda where the bulk of the presentation, including the post-presentation livestream, is all about. And we would never expected Mario to take cues from Kirby and start possessing people. From that crazy trailer to the various gameplay demos, Super Mario Odyssey looks like the good old sandbox 3D platformer game of yesteryear with some modern considerations. If Yooka-Laylee didn’t bring back 3D platforming in a big way this year, maybe good old Mario will.
