At the Triple I Initiative showcase, a showcase of indie games by indie developers, Ubisoft made a surprise appearance.
Developer Evil Empire, mostly known for their work in supporting critical acclaimed roguelite Dead Cells, is working on a new game called The Rogue Prince Of Persia. Yes, this is a Prince Of Persia game, but this time an indie dev outside of Ubisoft is taking point with Ubisoft publishing. So it’s an indie-style game.
The Rogue Prince of Persia is the fictional take on Ctesiphon, the capital of the Persian Empire. You control The Prince, who in this game has the gift of a mystical bola that revives him upon each death. And you will have to stop the Huns and its army of possessed soldiers, one death at a time.
Also, take a look at the art style. Having a purple Prince over a yellow tinged sky sure makes it pop and alive. Pop Life, even. The music won’t feature the popular singer, however. The soundtrack is produced by ASADI, a Persian-American music producer and artist. From the trailer, you can hear the fusion of old Persian folklore music with more modern beats.
Given Evil Empire’s repertoire, expect a lot of “action-platforming” moments where you have to avoid traps and sometimes enemies. Though you can do wall runs, it’s a Prince Of Persia game after all, as well other acrobatic abilities. There are different weapon varieties to make every run play a little different.
The Rogue Prince Of Persia will launch as a Steam Early Access, to allow community feedback to help shape up the game.
It is certainly wild to see Prince Of Persia coming back with not one, but two 2D games in a year. If Ubisoft’s in-house efforts with Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown was not enough (it was enough- that game is good), now we have a roguelite by an established indie outfit.
The Rogue Prince Of Persia will be available on PC as a Steam Early Access game on May 14.
