After months of leaks, rumours and speculations, Nintendo has dropped an innocuous update video which reveals the successor to the Nintendo Switch.
It really is called Nintendo Switch 2.
The reveal video shows a CG render of the new console that has the vibe of both a sleek new tech but also the joyful fun a video console is rarely seen depicted these days. The Switch 2 is bigger, has a new kickstand, revised ports and a subtly redesigned pair of Joy-Cons. Instead of sliding into the side, it’s now connected by slotting it in, which allows the ZR and ZL buttons on the now-embiggen Joy-Cons to protrude more. Hopefully using one half of a Joy-Con is comfier.
The accompanying dock is also redesigned.
Most importantly, the Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatible with most Nintendo Switch games (as confirmed previously), whether that be physical cartridges or digital downloads. Though some games are not fully compatible or supported, a list of incompatible games (like games with IR sensors) will be shared at a later date.
No official release date was given, but the Nintendo Switch 2 will be out sometime in 2025. A new Nintendo Direct focusing on April 2.
There will be hands-on events for the Nintendo Switch 2 around the world. Here’s hoping there will be some in Southeast Asia, as the publisher and console maker’s website now feature countries in this region.
