Long in the rumour mills, it has been officially revealed that the original Mass Effect trilogy is getting remastered. Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 forms Mass Effect Legendary Edition. This was revealed on N7 Day (a yearly Mass Effect celebration on November 7).
The remaster is done internally by Bioware with updated textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features. Expect to see the game in “super-sharp resolution, faster framerates, and beautiful visual enhancements”.
All single-player DLC from all three games, plus all promo weapons, armours and packs are included. And support for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are being targeted.
The Mass Effect trilogy takes place in a sci-fi setting where humans have made contact with alien races within the Milky Way galaxy. With a dangerous threat looming the galaxy, Commander Shepard begins their journey to thwart an unknown menace (in Mass Effect 1), die and revived to only be sent on a suicide mission (in Mass Effect 2) and rally the galaxy to fight the unsurmountable force that finally reveals themselves in full scale (in Mass Effect 3).
The original trilogy carries over save files with decisions made in previous games affect the outcomes of future games (well, to a point- there’s a reason the trilogy ending was hotly contested). Still, it’s Bioware’s first series that moves them from a pure-RPG powerhouse to a studio that dabbles with third-person shooter RPGs. But after that, the developers went downhill with their releases- namely Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem. (Dragon Age Inquisition was good, however.)
In addition, the blog post on Bioware has stated that “a veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe”. Mass Effect isn’t dead, and this new entry is still in the early stages of development.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be out in spring 2021 for the PS4, PC and Xbox One, with enhancements for PS5 and Xbox Series planned.
