Mafia: Definitive Edition is remaking the original 2002 open-world crime game but with modern technology (it’s based on the Mafia III engine) and modern sensibilities.
However, if you still want the Mafia remake to be as punishing as you once remembered, developers Hangar 13 will still offer that experience in the form of the Classic difficulty.
Classic difficulty will have little assists for cars (and new to the remake, bikes) so you can repeat your nightmares doing that compulsory race over and over again. GPS navigation via the minimap is still on, but you won’t get in-world navigation that appears at street corners.
Also, cops expect you to obey traffic rules on Classic, so going the wrong way or running a red light and you’ll get their attention. Attempt to not pull over when they are on to you and expect roadblocks as they chase you, like the original game.
Enemies are also more aggressive, better at avoiding attacks, better at flanking your position and deal more damage. And there’s no blip of them on the minimap.
Reloading a clip means losing all the bullets remaining in the clip. Because that’s how the original was. Health kits restore less health, and you only regen health up to 20%.
For those that want the rough and punishing experience of the original game, Mafia: Definitive Edition will oblige you. But even better, many of the difficulty options can be toggled individually. If you like Classic but don’t want to obey traffic rules, you can adjust the police response to your liking.
Mafia: Definitive Edition will be out on September 25 for the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Stadia.
