July’s PS Plus free games offering was supposed to be PES 2019 and, for Asia, Aegis Defenders. But at the very last minute, Playstation announced that it’s switching Konami’s annual football game for Quantum Dream’s latest adventure, Detroit: Become Human.
No specific reasoning was given why, but one would assume it might have something to do with Konami’s licensing deal with Liverpool F.C., which featured heavily in last year’s game’s marketing, has ended. But that’s not specifically it.
In a statement received by Gamespot, a Konami spokesperson told that “this decision was made by Sony and so please make an inquiry to Sony.”
Another statement by PES brand manager of Europe Lennart Bobzien also said along the same lines- Konami was surprised to see the change themselves.
I cannot really tell you what happened because I just found out today, in the morning when I opened my laptop,” he said. ” I can’t really explain.”
Sony’s official statement, as retrieved by various outlets including Eurogamer, has this to say:
“We have decided to make a change to the PS Plus games lineup this month, and will be offering Detroit: Become Human Digital Deluxe Edition instead of Pro Evolution Soccer 2019. This was a decision we decided to make as a company, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
PS Plus subscribers in Asia will still receive a free bonus add-on for PES 2019. But the game itself, well, you still need to buy that.
The upcoming PES 2020, or its official title eFootball: PES 2020 is coming out on September 10th for the PS4, PC (Steam) and Xbox One. The new “eFootball” moniker is to emphasise their esports support moving forward. The new yearly game will be featuring full license for Manchester United this time.
