Indie Jam, the annual event celebrating regional indie games from Southeast Asia and nurturing the game development scene in Malaysia organised by The Magic Rain, is back for 2026 and is bigger than ever.
The indie game showcase for Indie Jam 2026 will be one of the biggest in Malaysia, with over 60 games from developers across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Brunei with support from regional partners including Goldpact Goblins, Ysbryd Games, and Soft Source Publishing. The 60 games featured in Indie Jam 2026 will be playable on-site as well as online via the official Indie Jam event on Steam.
The embiggening of Indie Jam also means a change in location for the on-site event. Indie Jam 2026 will be hosted in Management and Science University, Shah Alam from April 4-5. The event is also hosted in partnership with MSU Engage Talent Sync Expo 2026.
The Student Game Jam component for Indie Jam 2026 takes a new twist in the form of the Games For Change Student Game Jam Kuala Lumpur. Supported by Management and Science University, Playing For The Planet, and Tencent Institute of Games, this is part of the wider Games For Change Student Game Jam which is also hosting game jams in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The inaugural game jam tasks university students and recent graduates to take on a one-week game jam that tackles real world environmental challenges. Winners to be declared by a mix of judges’ scoring and public voting held throughout Indie Jam 2026. Winning teams will be awarded scholarship from Yayasan MSU, Digital Blacksmith Workshop tickets, and an invitation to showcase their game at Games for Change Hong Kong 2026 Festival in May. In addition, participating teams also earn an opportunity to submit their games to the G4C Student Challenge and Tencent’s GWB (Games Without Borders) Awards 2026.
The student game jam isn’t the only efforts Indie Jam is making to grow the game dev industry. Indie Jam 2026 is also making efforts to support the regional indie game dev scene with its partnership with gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show. Indie Jam is hosting its first pitch competition to provide studios the opportunity to attend and showcase their game at gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026 in October.
Indie Jam is also partnering with Women In Games Asia, Outcrowd Malaysia, and Digital Blacksmith School to provide accessible mentorship, networking, and job matching opportunities for students and developers attending the event.
Free industry talks will also be available throughout the weekend of Indie Jam 2026. The topics here are geared for developers, or folks within the games industry, but is open to the public just like the rest of the event. This year’s talks feature speakers from Playstack, Goldpact Goblins, Nerdook Productions, 7th Beat Games, Toge Productions, Neon Noroshi, Passion Republic Games, Albrite Studios, and more.
For those unable to attend Indie Jam 2026, there’s also livestream showcase. The Indie Jam Direct goes live on March 28, 9PM Malaysia Time (GMT+8) on Indie Jam’s YouTube that serves as a preview of the event happening the next week. There will also be an Indie Jam event on Steam from March 28 until April 12 that will highlight the participating indie games.
Indie Jam 2026 looks set to be bigger than ever, with a venue change, bigger list of participating indie devs and more partnerships with the games industry, but it remains focused on its core aspect of being a community-driven event.
“Even as Indie Jam grows bigger, it is still community-driven at heart,” says Nathalie Tay, founder of Indie Jam. “We have the pleasure of working with universities and industry partners who put their hearts into building a healthier and more sustainable game development industry for the next generation. We still have a long way to go, but every year is a step in the right direction.”
