In Marathon, Anyone Can Hear You Loot

How are you surviving on Tau Ceti IV? Marathon (2026) is a ruthless extraction shooter where the environment is just as dangerous as the competing runners, other players, all gunning to loot the scraps of these eerily deserted human colony. But here’s one important tip you need to know and be aware of:

Anyone can hear you loot.

Can other players hear you looting in Marathon? Yes.

When you open a loot container, it pops a sound. When you pick up an item, it also pops a sound. Not just for you, you can listen to the dings of other runners in your crew, so you know they’re looting.

But more importantly, this sound also can be heard by all runners in the vicinity, including other players.

So hot tip: only loot when you know it’s safe to do so.

If you’re expecting hostiles and camping, trying to pick up that loose Unstable Mass on a table will give your position away, moreso if you’re opening a container. It just lets them know you don’t have eyes on your back, open to backstabs and gunshots.

On the flip side, use this tip to your advantage to catch unsuspected runners. When you arrive at a point of interest, take some time to stay still and use the 3D audio to pinpoint any danger. You can tell from the looting sounds if they’re in the building, and if they are on the same floor as you or not. More often than not having a good ear on the ground gives you an advantage to get the jump, or avoid getting jumped on, by other players.

Now, pray that whoever is you’re trying to jump or avoid getting jumped on aren’t kitted out with blue shields and Cryo-worthy worth of loot.
