In its first two weeks of launch, Hogwarts Legacy passes 12 million units and $850 million USD in sales globally, WB Games announced.
This is despite the game being ridden with controversy due to the Wizarding World IP, which this game and the Harry Porter series are based of, is associated with J.K. Rowling.
The sales number, within that small window of release, puts it roughly as big as the biggest Sony first-party game launch that was God Of War Ragnarok, which should explain why PlayStation was actively promoting it- even dedicated a whole State Of Play broadcast for it.
12 million isn’t Elden Ring numbers of 20 million copies, but it’s not Elden Ring numbers yet. We’ll see in a year’s time how many copies of the game have been sold.
If anything, the takeaway here is that single-player AAA games still have a large player base.
Hogwarts Legacy takes place before the Harry Potter books and puts you as a new student in Hogwarts the joined the academy in odd circumstances, as a fifth-year student. From there, you’ll make friends and discover the various mysteries that are in the world, as well as partake in school and after-school activities.
The game is out now on PS5, PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S, and coming to PS4, Xbox One and Switch on July 25.
