Summer Game Fest 2023 Showcase’s showstopper show-ender was the new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Despite the game title literally having the word “Remake” on it ironically the reimagining of the 1997 RPG classic hinted at this not being a faithful recreation of the same story millions of fans grew to love.
This is moreso with the latest trailer, as various events are being shown here that don’t quite line up with what you’d expect Cloud and the party was supposed to face once they leave Midgar. The scenery is familiar, but some scenes feel.. off. The music is also of a sombre and mysterious note.
“The Unknown Journey Continues” is the game’s tagline here.
The gameplay here remains faithful to the one seen in FFVII Remake, in it being an action-RPG while still using Commands, similar to the Kingdom Hearts series. (Final Fantasy XVI, releasing later this month, is instead going for a character-action style of gameplay.)

Yuffie, playable in Final Fantasy VII Intergrade’s new scenario, and Red XIII are seen in the trailer as playable characters.
The wildest reveal is that FFVII Rebirth will be included in two discs. It’s not a three-disc release like the original game, but the fact that it has two discs for a PS5 title means the game will likely be more than 100GB in size.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be out in Early 2024 exclusive to PS5.
