Doom: The Dark Ages Releases This May

id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages now has a release date. As revealed during this morning’s Xbox Developer Direct, the latest entry to the legendary FPS series will arrive this May.

The game will also launch on PS5 day and date as the PC and Xbox Series X|S platforms, which shouldn’t be as noteworthy, but this shows that Bethesda are back to being a multi-platform publisher, after a short stint of releasing games only on Xbox and PC after being acquired by Xbox.

Doom: The Dark Ages got an 11-minute segment during the Developer Direct featuring the thumping heavy metal music (sadly not scored by Mick Gordon anymore), a little more dabs of fantasy aesthetic that happily co-exist with the hellish sci-fi landscapes Doom always has, and good ol’ ripping and tearing.

But it’s a different flavour of rip-and-tear. As Game Director Hugo Martin puts it: “In [Doom] 2016 we asked you to run and gun. In Doom Eternal it was jump and shoot. And in Doom: The Dark Ages, you’re gonna stand and fight.”

The new shield saw plays a big part of the Doom Slayer’s kit. It can be thrown, it can deflect and it can even parry attacks, all from one button. Yes, they added parries in Doom: The Dark Ages. And it can be followed up by a melee attack via three different melee weapons.

There’s also the ability to pilot a giant mech and a dragon with a gun turret. A customisable difficulty setting, new exploration puzzles thanks to the shield saw

And for the long-time fans, there’s still nods to the old FPS. The UI now has that Doomguy head nodding and the health and armour is at the bottom center of the screen again.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, as the Doom Slayer wages a medieval war against Hell.

Doom: The Dark Ages will be out on May 15 for the PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also release day-1 on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
