Crytek has revealed that they are working on a real-time ray tracing tech for their game engine, the CryEngine. Unlike Nvidia’s solution, which requires the RTX line of GeForce cards, Crytek’s solution will work on any GPU, by AMD or Nvidia.
The demo, called “Neon Noir”, highlights the ray-tracing tech in action. It is running on an AMD Vega 56 GPU.
The reflections on windows, light bouncing off surfaces and puddles are looking really good. Have a look:
Neon Noir is running on a unique version of CryEngine 5.5 and the experimental ray tracing feature is part of CryEngine’s Total Illumination toolkit.
It looks impressive, and having it not tied to specific hardware or API should allow more developers using the CryEngine to try out and support ray tracing once it is available. There’s not many games being developed on the engine these days, maybe this will entice some developers to try it out.
