Bandai Namco has locked in a release date for Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters. It will arrive later this August.
Based on the manga series by Yoichi Takahashi, Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters is a “soccer action game” that adapts the shonen manga take on the beautiful game that most people around the world refer to as football. This sequel will based on the World Youth Championships arc from the original manga, as the titular captain of Japan’s youth team Tsubasa takes on the world’s greatest teams.
The new story trailer should give a glimpse of what to expect from Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters’ Story Mode. It is football season this year, but if you’re pining for some passionate, over-the-top, depiction of football (with a good dose of sparks and spiritual beings made manifest), Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters is there to delivery. Some may find the “anime-ness” a little cheesy. Of course Tsubasa, as his name implies, spiritually manifest wings on the football pitch.
Fans of Captain Tsubasa should be glad to know that its author is involved with the game.
Here’s an interview with Yoichi Takahashi, who’s well aware of the flashy moves where sparks and magical beings are conjured can be too much, and was “careful not to overdo it and turn it into science fiction.”
Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters kicks off on August 27 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, with the PC (Steam) release the next day on August 28 in Asia.
