Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Releases This April

Turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 now has a release date. As revealed at the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, the adventure into this fantastical Belle Epoque world begins this April.

The Developer Direct shows more of the overworld exploration, where one can move around the world map like how golden era JRPGs from the PS1 days do it, and see the beautiful sights powered by Unreal Engine 5.

The Developer Direct has developer Sandfall Interactive tell their story on how Clair Obscur began development: a passion project that plays like turn-based JRPGs but “fully leverage the latest tech to refresh the genre with new features and took place in a compelling world.”

There’s also new characters revealed, one is a playable party member named Monoco. A Gestral, Monoco can transform into one of the many enemies and use their moveset. To use JRPG parlance, he is this game’s Blue Mage.

On the topic of JRPGs, the Developer Direct also showed that party members have over 20 different active skills and over 100(!) passives which you can equip, with every character having a different playstyle. Looks like there’s potential for buildcrafting here.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in a world where every year, a mysterious being called the Paintress wakes up to paint a number on a number. If anyone is older than the painted number, they die. And every year, the number ticks down. So now people are sending Expeditions in hopes to stop this cycle, though none has succeed yet. And we follow the journey of Expedition 33, with Gustave, the main protagonist as its leader.

The game features a star-studded English voice cast.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be out on April 24 for the PS4, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
