Here’s a cool Japanese indie game, with an interesting hook and a famous name attached to it.
Avemary Rocket – Captain Patchwork – is a 2D action-adventure game by sutesan games and publisher room6 where you must ready to repair the spaceship you’re on board that can happen at any time.
These emergencies can range from putting out fires to defeating enemies, as well as having to do some fixes on the spaceship appropriately named Patchwork. Troubleshooting emergencies that can happen at any time gives Avemary Rocket this speedrunning (or real time attack, RTA, as it’s referred in Japanese gaming community) experience. It’s integral enough to the experience that Avemary Rocket is also classified as an RTA action adventure. A neat way to use real-time as a mechanic, but instead of making players do time management (see Dead Rising, the upcoming The Blood Of Dawnwalker), Avemary Rocket force players to overcome challenges under duress of time pressure.
In your free time, when you’re not on call to fix the patchwork of a spaceship, you can freely explore Patchwork and discover the mystery it holds.
Avemary Rocket – Captain Patchwork – is created by sutensan games, a collective of three people currently in their fifties: Masashi Kimura (room6), Shuhei Miyazawa (room_909) and the pixel artist that prefers to be known as Pixel. You may know him as the developer of Cave Story, the landmark one-person indie game in the 2000s.
Here’s a message from each one of the devs accompanying the game’s announcement:
“It makes me happy to be making games with my tea-drinking buddies, Miyazawa and Pixel, based on my favourite theme, space. This is an action-adventure game with a variety of gimmicks, with features to entertain you through years of playthrough. We’ll be taking our time to slowly craft this game, please look forward to it!”
Masashi Kimura (room6): Story planning and production
2026 will mark 30 years since I first met Pixel. I’ve helped him on production with his games but never imagined he’d be helping me with mine. This project would also not be possible without Kimura. I hope players will enjoy the puzzle-solving, route-finding and ship-hopping action. This is a space-forward journey born from ideas developed in the corner of a coffee shop.”
Shuhei Miyazawa (room_909): Planning, director, programming, sound
“I’ve been tasked with creating the graphics for Avemary Rocket. Shuhei and I have known each other since our student days and we’ve often spoken about creative pursuits. I’m grateful to Kimura from room6 for giving me the opportunity to create a game alongside him! I’ll be making pixel art while supporting Shuhei as he tackles a brand new genre.”
