April 2021 PS5 Software Update Will Let You Store Downloaded PS5 Games On An External USB Storage

An upcoming system software update for the PS5 will be arriving tomorrow. This new update will finally let you store any PS5 games you’ve installed and downloaded to an external USB storage.

Due to the way PS5 games are designed to make use of the fast internal SSD, you can’t play PS5 games on an external hard drive, which is understandable.

So who is this for then? Folks who use a lot of digital games, and folks that can’t afford to keep re-download their games library. Not everyone can afford to download the large games over and over when they want to revisit them after playing a new one. And the SSD storage is limited.

It’s a good quality of life update. For more info on what you can do with external USB storage when connected to a PS5, you can learn more here.

The software update also brings new social feature, like cross-gen Share Play for PS4 and PS5, improvements to the Game Base feature and a better trophies list. Also, you can customise your game library now, with the ability to search and hide some games. Why this isn’t a day-1 feature, we don’t know.
