AMD announced that they are partnering up with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Esports Team, the esports arm of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
This multi-year deal will see Mercedes’ esports team be using AMD-powered PC rigs for practice and compete in this year’s F1 Esports Series. The team will also be opening its own dedicated training facility.
AMD has already established a partnership with the Brackley-based F1 team before. But now they will also be supporting the esports side. This makes a lot of sense given AMD makes consumer PCs, and the series is competing on the PC version of Codemasters’ yearly F1 games.
Mercedes reckons the extra bit of performance from the many tech that powers AMD CPUs and GPUs can give the esports team an advantage.
“In the world of competitive esports, milliseconds can define whether you win, or not, like on track,” said James Vowles, Motorsport Strategy Director, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. “It is crucial to have the very best gaming platform providing the highest framerates, at the lowest latency, without compromising on reliability.”
Mercedes has won both the F1 Esports Series driver and team championships in 2018, and are looking to add more on the line in 2021 after signing 2020 driver champion Jarno Opmeer.
