AMD FidelityFX Coming To Xbox Series Consoles

AMD and Microsoft announced during Microsoft’s Game Stack Live graphics keynote that AMD FidelityFX is coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles.

AMD FidelityFX is a suite of graphics tech that game developers can make use of to make their games look and run better. The FidelityFX suite includes Variable Shading (GPU can prioritise which part of the scene should be rendered with full power and other parts lesser) and Contrast Adapting Sharpening (CAS) (sharpens and up-res an image scene, making anti-aliasing much better) and FidelityFX Shadow Denoiser, a tech that makes ray-traced shadows and reflections looks softer.

The three tools will be available for game developers to use on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. This will in turn produces better-looking games on the next-gen consoles for players.

We won’t be surprised if the availability of such tools on a gaming console will also impact players on PC. Should more developers adopt AMD’s FidelityFX tech on Xbox, we could see the same tech being brought over to the PC versions of the games. Over 40 games have support for FidelityFX features right now, and maybe that number will sharply increase in the future.

Both the Xbox Series X|S consoles and PS5 are powered by AMD’s chips, though they have a more significant partnership with Xbox, as seen here.
