11 Bit Studios, the Polish developers behind Frostpunk and This War Of Mine (as well as publisher of fellow indie games), have announced their next game, The Alters.
The debut trailer premiered at the PC Gaming Show 2022, showcasing Jan Dolski, who wakes to realise he is just one of many other altered Jans.
In order to survive, the original Jan decided to create alternate versions of himself as helping hands.
Those are apparently not clones. The other Jans not only have a different appearance, but their personalities are different too. Hence, they are Alters. Think alternate multiverse versions of Jans colliding in a Multiverse of Madness kind of situation.

Despite the trailer and long interview on the PC Gaming Show, we still have no idea what sort of game The Alters is. A strategy game? An RPG? A narrative game with choices that matter? The Alters will have you trying to get the many different Jans, all with different skillsets, to ensure you survive in the weird circular structure that is housing them. But what sort of game will that be?
What we do know is that The Alters is being made by the in-house development team (which they have three) that specifically worked on This War Of Mine previously, there have been three years of development work, and will be powered by the Unreal Engine.
No release date for The Alters has been announced, though it will be coming to PC with a Steam page now live.
