A new survey by YouGov, commissioned by Ciena, a networking systems, services, and software company has found that 66% of Singaporean adults play video games and consider themselves a gamer.
49% of those are considered light gamers, where they spend less than 14 hours a day playing games. So hardcore players are still in the minority.
The full study, which includes the population of Japan and South Korea, has also found that most gamers rate engaging gameplay as one of the most important factors in gaming enjoyment, with at least 46% of correspondents saying so.
This should be a no-brainer, we play games because of the gameplay, right? But it’s good to see the data adds up.
The next important factor is a reliable and constant network quality. With the rise of mobile games and online-only (be it single-player or multiplayer) games, good network coverage is paramount for gamers in the three countries.
In fact, for the Singapore respondents, nearly half of them are willing to pay for better internet speeds (42%), upgrade their router (62%), switch to a different provider (53%) and search for a provider that can provide reliable, uninterrupted connection (63%).
When it comes to factors that are important for a satisfying gaming session, a majority of 37% says a comfortable setting is important, followed by pleasant room temperature with air conditioning (18%) and ergonomic gaming gear (11%). Organised setup and having snacks and beverages are not as much important, with 6% and 5% respectively.
The full whitepaper can be found on Ciena’s website (you’ll need to register to download it).
The survey definitely has a vested interest in seeing how the population of Singapore feels about paying more for better internet services, but it still provides additional insights for those curious about how the gaming landscape in one of the biggest countries in Southeast Asia is at the moment.
