You read that right. Sony will be providing a free demo disc, both in disc form or digitally via the Playstation Store for short demos of upcoming VR titles.
Since the lineup of VR launch titles vary from region to region, here’s whats in the disc for Asia:
- Ace Banana
- Allumette
- Battlezone
- DRIVECLUB™ VR
- GNOG
- HARMONIX MUSIC VR
- Headmaster
- Job Simulator
- Mortal Blitz VR
- O! My Genesis VR
- PlayStation® VR Worlds
- Rez Infinite
- RIGS™ Mechanized Combat League
- Thumper
- Tumble™ VR
- Wayward Sky
- Within
Some of the notable titles here includes Driveclub VR, which is a standalone title separate from the now-defunct Evolution Studio’s launch title, Battlezone, which we gave it a whirl in our first test with PS VR, Job Simulator, an already successful VR game for the HTC Vive and RIGS, a multiplayer game with mechs. The rest of the list could be hidden gems (like Rez Infinite). OF course, you’ll need a PS VR headset to actually make use of the free demos.
It’s great to see the revival of demo discs, and demos in general. Giving a small slice of the game away for people to try out can be a doubled-edged sword (people either don’t like it and avoid it, or like it and felt they have enough of what they played already), this should give those that pre-ordered PS VR more information on what game they should be eyeing out for. The technology is indeed here, but for VR to catch on in the gaming space, it needs.. well, games. Good games. Games that really use the potential that VR offers.
Playstation VR is launching soon in October, but you need to pre-order to get one right now. It will take a while until these headsets can be sold in normal retailers.
