The Pathless has been making rounds in various game announcement event, but this is the first time we see proper gameplay, at the August 2020 State Of Play. The gameplay footage represents the version on PS5
The Pathless is an open-world game. And your main character, the Hunter, uses a bow and arrow.
And before you groan, there’s actually a cool new traversal mechanic. There are various targets littered around the world where you can shoot your arrows. A hit fills up your dash meter, which increases movement speed. You don’t aim you arrows either, it’s a lock-on target.
What this means is that you shoot your arrows to keep the dash meter full, which causes the Hunter moving at high speeds at all times. Keep that archery combo going and you’ll be traversing the world in style.
You also have an eagle that you can carry you to fly (archery combos also keep you flying longer).
The Pathless also has no mini-map. You’ll need to her mask to “peer into the spirit world” to highlight locations you haven’t reached yet. As such, you’ll naturally need to get to high ground to spot these locations.
There are boss fights as well as puzzle rooms in The Pathless.
This new game from the developers of Abzu sounds like an interesting take on the open-world genre without following too much of the same, tired formula. If Ghost Of Tsushima showed that you can make open-world exploration fun by no having a map, The Pathless is already on the right.. path.
The Pathless will be releasing on PS4, PS5, PC (Epic Games Store) and Apple Arcade later this year, Holiday 2020.
