Tetris Effect Has A Secret Stage, A Throwback To The Game Boy’s Tetris

Tetris Effect, the trippy Tetris game from the makers of Rez and Lumines, have tons of stages. Some are more peaceful, with soothing acapellas heard as you rotate the tetrominoes into place. Some are more frantic and focused, like the Ritual Passion stage where Kecak chants can be heard.

But there’s also a secret stage.

In Tetris Effect, there are weekly community events where everyone can work together to achieve a cumulative score. The reward for participating last weekend was a new stage.

Developers Enhance cheekily did not comment on the existence of a secret stage, but there is indeed one. And it is in fact called 1989. This is a reference to Tetris for Game Boy, which launched that year.

For those that may not be familiar, here is some game footage of it:

Now, compare that to the secret 1989 stage in Tetris Effect. It has pretty similar sound effects, the same iconic theme song and the pallete is a throwback to how Game Boy games look like at the time.

For those that missed the event, the stage can be unlocked by reaching Level 50 on your account, so get ready to spend some quality time clearing lines to get this little piece of nostalgia.

Tetris Effect is out now for PS4 with optional PS VR support.
