Look who’s knocking on Western Rome’s door? It’s the Gaul, the new civ to debut in Civilization with the upcoming Byzantium And Gaul Pack DLC, part of the New Frontier Pass.
Led by Ambiorix, the Gaul brings a new take on an industrious civ with military bonuses. They’re meant for a turtling playstyle, encouraging the you to hold huge swathes of lands early and make it really, really hard for others to conquer it.
Gaul’s unique ability, Hallstatt Culture, gives Mines adjacency bonuses for districts, a Culture bonus gain and drops a culture bomb (acquires all territory surrounding it). The catch is Gaul won’t have normal adjacency bonuses by building districts next to city centres.
As for Ambiorix, his own unique ability, King of the Eburones, grants culture when a non-civilian (military and support units) are trained, the amount based on unit cost. Plus, Melee, anti-cavalry, and ranged units are stronger with more combat strength when they are next to other combat units.
The Gaul has the Gaesatae unique unit, a Warrior replacement that costs more to train but gain combat strength when fighting stronger units and district defences. Lastly, Gaul’s unique district is the Oppidum, an Industrial Zone replacement but it’s cheaper, unlocks earlier in the tech tree and auto-unlocks the Apprentice technology in the tech tree when first constructed. Also, it has adjacency bonuses with quarries or any strategic resources. Also also, Oppidums have range attacks, like an encampment can.
The Gaul brings a new style of play, and their bonuses definitely make them an ideal choice to play as in the new Highlands map type included in the DLC pack.
The Byzantium And Gaul Pack DLC arrives on September 24 for the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
