A whole hour of gameplay for Squadron 42, the single-player campaign set in the universe of Star Citizen, was unveiled at this year’s CitizenCon (Citizen Con 2594).
This is the first hour of the full campaign. Some of the scenes here were seen in previous gameplay reveals, but this is an uncut footage of the first hour, featuring a lot (a lot) of cutscenes.
It’s quite the bombastic opening, but gameplay-wise it starts with some casual walking within the ship, a turret sequence, and then a sequence on board an ailing ship where the main baddies are revealed. Fundamentally, this has the basic gameplay of a AAA blockbuster game, being carried hard by the grand scale the epic space battle has. The eponymous Squadron 42 does make an appearance, right around the 42-mark, appropriately enough.
And it looks like you won’t be playing Squadron 42 anytime soon, it’s now targeting a 2026 launch. That’s more than a whole year worth of wait for a game that was previously touted as “feature complete“.
Squadron 42 promises action on foot and in spaceship, as the FPS campaign will feature Hollywood talents including Mark Hamill, Eleanor Tomlinson, Gary Oldman, John Rhys-Davies, Sophie Wu, Jonathan Bailey, and Henry Cavill as part of the cast.
Cloud Imperium Games has been operating since 2012 and technically hasn’t launched a full game yet. Star Citizen is technically an Early Access title, as the current state of the game still hasn’t implemented the many ambitious features of this first-person space sim will offer.
