Ahead of the launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tomorrow on February 29, publisher Square Enix has issued a statement regarding the physical copies of the game.
The game features two discs- one is the Play Disc and the other is the Data Disc. And these discs are unfortunately labelled incorrectly in that they are swapped.
Square Enix said that this is “due to an error during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s manufacturing process”.
However, the solution is to simply insert the Play Disc (which is actually the Data Disc) first, do the install process, then insert the Data Disc (which is actually the Play Disc) and use that disc to play the game.

Here’s the step-by-step instructions as provided by Square Enix:
- Insert the black disc (marked “Play Disc”) into your PlayStation®5 console and install the requisite data.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Once the installation is complete, insert the white disc (marked “Data Disc”) to start the game.
- After the initial installation, players will only ever need to use the disc labeled “Data Disc” from step 2 to play.
Sony is already aware of the issue and are investigating the cause of this mishap.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is famously marketed to be available in two discs, indicating how massive the game is that one Ultra-HD Blu-ray disc is not enough to contain all the game files.
This is the second physical copy mishap that has happen this year, the first being mislabelled discs of Persona 3 Reload, which affected gamers in Southeast Asia.
